OD LUNCH IN OXFORD

Three years ago when we held our first OD pub lunch in the Oxford area, nine of us attended. Last year it was 15 and at this the third lunch (Saturday 4th November, 2017) we were up to 22 which pretty much now ensures that this will be an annual fixture in the UK ODU calendar.

The Bell at Hampton Poole, about a ten-minute drive from the centre of Oxford is a charming and lively - and quite upmarket - pub. I think they are starting to grow fond of the ODs; the ratio of staff to ODs seems higher than at other tables.

As usual, we collected at the bar for some pre-lunch drinks before sitting down to a splendid meal washed down by some good Cape wine.

Three generations of Rhodes Scholars: Tony Honoré, Dee Ferrandi and Chris Winearls
And once again, we were particularly delighted to have as our guests Tony Honoré (F, 1939) and his wife Deborah. Tony, a Bishops Rhodes Scholar, has spent his entire career at Oxford. He was a former Regius Professor of Civil Law and Fellow of All Souls. It was lovely to see two other Rhodes Scholars at the lunch who formed, as it were, an almost perfect arc connecting the past with the present: Dee Ferrandi  (F, 2011) is Bishops newest Rhodes Scholar sits at the youngest end and Chris Winearls (W, 1967) falls more or less at the median. Chris, too, is an Oxford University lifer having remained there since his Scholarship. He says he's retired, but still consults (in nephrology) and is an Emeritus Fellow of Jesus College.

Next year's lunch is on Saturday 6th October and notwithstanding its name, is for all ODs and their partners/wives. We just hold it in Oxford.

The guest list with houses and years is at the end of the posting.
